The Ceylon Moor Ladies’ Union was formed in 1936 by a group of 11 Muslim women with a vision to address the needs of women and children in an era where the voice of women of this small ethnic group in Sri Lanka was rarely heard. With this objective in mind the Ceylon Moor Ladies Union has spearheaded several effective projects targeting underprivileged women in Sri Lanka. The Ceylon Moor Ladies’ Union incorporated by the Act of Parliament of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is an “Approved Charity” recognized by the Government of Sri Lanka. The CMLU established the premier Muslim Girls College in Colombo in 1941, namely Muslim Ladies College, Colombo 4, with funds generated by the members of the organization. Subsequently, this College was taken over by the Government under the Laws of the country then prevailing. Since the inception fifteen executive committee members with the relevant subcommittees and volunteers have served every two years in the name of Allah for over eight decades.
