90th Anniversary Commemoration

The Ceylon Moor Ladies Union (CMLU) , is a voluntary organisation established on the 25th of March 1936 by a group of women who sought to eliminate illiteracy amongst girls, who are the most vulnerable members of society. The CMLU was later incorporated by Act Number 27 of the Parliament of Ceylon in June 1968 and recognised as a government approved charity by Gazette No: 305 of 78/2/17. For the past 90 years we have served our nation through the tireless efforts of volunteers whose sole aim is the uplifting of underprivileged and vulnerable girls and women across Sri Lanka. Our charitable work spans a wide range of initiatives which include and are not limited to:

  • Education empowerment, including the founding of Muslim Ladies College in 1941 at Golconda, Colombo 3.
  • CMLU Home For Girls, established in 1978 in Kirullapone, caring for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable girls in conjunction with the Department of Probation and Childcare of Sri Lanka.
  • University student grants and sponsorship for undergraduates facing financial hardship via CMLU external sponsorships.
  • Vocational support and skills training for young women through the CMLU Empowerment Program.
  • Welfare assistance for vulnerable families and individuals that require community relief initiatives, especially during times of national crisis and emergencies including economic crises and natural disasters.

We will be commemorating our 90th Anniversary on the 18th of July 2026 at Hotel Ramada,  At this event we will honour and strengthen the legacy of the Ceylon Moor Ladies’ Union and share the impact of our work to recognise and inspire volunteers and benefactors who have supported this organisation thus far. Through this event we would like to raise funds to support initiatives such as:

  • The continued operation of multiple CMLU charity projects.
  • Expansion of our Home For Girls and other community programs.
  • The development of new initiatives to uplift girls and women.
  • In-residence vocational training programs for our girls above 18 as advised by Probation and Childcare Services.

By joining hands with us you will directly enable us to strengthen and expand on vital services, aid and volunteering.
